Bank Of Israel Will Divert Foreign Reserves With Stocks

The BOI will start a pilot as early as February and invest 500 Million USD in foreign stocks. That will divert 0.7 % of the foreign reserves from USD to stocks, corporate bonds and government bond's options.

This move is possible due the change in the BOI law that took place a year and a half ago. until then the BOI was permitted to hold only currencies, gold and foreign government bonds. like other central banks the BOI bought 30 Million USD on a computer management system and the investments will be run by an external management.

Not like other central banks the BOI doesn't hold any gold or other currencies other that the USD. In the last 5 years, Stanley Fischer, BOI chair man, had doubled the Israeli foreign reserves from around 40 Billion USD to almost 80 Billion USD. while none of it is invested in gold or anything other than USD.
Comparing BOI's accumulation of USD with the USD true money supply in the last 5 years might make one be concerned about the future of the international stocks market.

Bankers from Bank Leumi were quoted as they are saying that only a "security (military) escalation" will stop the New Israeli Shekel from keep strengthening against the US Dollar.

This week the US Dollar closed in Israel at the rate of 3.438 NIS a 2.5 year old low. and made The Bank Of Israel to purchase 100,000 USD only on friday. In the Last 3 years the Israeli foreign currency reserve almost doubled from 40 Billion USD to 70 B USD.

On the one hand buying USD is as bad as printing Shekels. It like importing of the American inflation to Israel. on the other hand foreign investors keeps about 70 B USD in liquid investments in Israel and the Bank Of Israel wants to match them as a currency reserve so Israel wont fall into a thailand/Russian scenario.

All the victims in the coming war in Gaza, Arabs and Jews will be victims of the Currency war and the effort of both Israel and the Hamas to stop the arab rebellion of 2011 outside their borders.

Exclusive Item at Calcalist, (Hebrew) says today that the Israel Ministry of Finance is working on a program that will allow it to by $ 30 Billion. hence joining the Bank Of Israel Bonanza after the USD. In the 1990's a Million Immigrants from the former Soviet Union Had immigrated to Israel.

Today they are about 20% of the Israeli society.

Over the years they formed a number of political parties that run to the Israeli parliament.

None succeeded like "Yisrael Beiteinu", a party who isn't define itself as am immigrants party but as an ultra nationalist party.

The fact half of it's parliament members and most of it's voters comes from that wave of immigration shows that in it's base is the same ultra nationalism that you can find in Putin's Russia.

This Week Parliament member Anastasia Michaeli tried to physically attack an arab parliament member. Until now it doesn't seams she will be charged for attack attempt.

This is the first time in 62 years that the Israeli parliament see such violent behavior.

What did Anastasia Michaeli had to say about it ?

"We should ask Putin what does he do with traitors".

Basically she wishes that Israeli people who are not "patriotic" enough or journalists like Anat Kamm and Uri Blau will face the same faith their russian colleges face.

The international organization, Reporters Without Borders, reports that the status of at least 15 reporters who took part in the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza still cannot be reached directly.

As an Israeli, I am even more concern with what happens with the Israeli "journalists" who are allegedly free.

Until now, neither the prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor the minister of defense Ehud Barak didn't gave their accounts to the Israeli attack of the flotilla not to mention answering questions about it.

All what the Israeli media is broadcasting are interviews with commando soldiers whining about the foxhole that the Israeli government sent them to with their backs to the cameras.

The same spin who shut any discussion about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had made it to Israel. Because whatever folly the Israeli government will do, the Israeli public will always want to support it's troops.

The Facts:

At November 28th 2009 Haaretz newspaper published an IDF document that Shed light on the way the IDF uses the targeted killings procedure.

Targeted Killing is a procedure that allows the IDF to kill suspects in Terror without trial if the IDF has reasons to believe the killing will prevent future terror attacks and that an arrest it not possible.

It's important to emphasize that the capital punish in Israel only apply for people who took an active part in the attempt to eliminate the Jewish people during the holocaust. (WWII)

The document that was published in Haaretz showed that The IDF authorized the killing of terror suspects that there was a possibility to arrest and more.

It showed that the chief of Central command Yair Naveh and the chief of stuff Gabi Ashkenazi also authorized the limited killing of non suspects during the usage of the targeted killing procedure.

The rumors:

The rumors that are spreading around in Israeli media circles, are about the source that leaked the IDF document to Haaretz news paper and about an Israeli journalist that according to the seventh eye media coverage magazine took an unpaid leave.

Acording to the rumors the journalist is under a house arrest sine late december last year and her de facto retirement from Walla website was forced on her by the Israeli secret service. Until now the only piece about this story that passed the Israeli Military Censor was this.

If any of this story is true it means that this is the first time in Israel since the Kav 300 affair that the Israeli secret service and the Israeli Military Censor are acting in a legal cover up and not in securing the safety of the Israeli public.

On the other hand some rumors dispute these rumors.

How come it is still a secret ?

Here are some points that turned out in a conversation I had with Aryeh Amihay.

Usually, when the Israeli media knows something that the Israeli Military Censor Censors, it leaks it to the western media and then bounce it back and publishes it with the appropriate title "According to western media outlets....(israel has so and so nuclear weapon heads)" and so on. But this time the Israeli media didn't send the story to the western media at all.

So how come it doesn't happen in this case ?

Right now the Israeli media has no interest in leaking the story.

A colleague journalist is under house arrest, which isn't as bad as being detained in a police station. keeping it quiet makes it much more easier for the Israeli secret service to cut some slack and maybe even not pressing charges against the journalist.

The secret service acting in the name of the IDF's Information Security Department. The document that was published in Haaretz newspaper was a military one. As much as the Information Security Department in the IDF has to act firmly against the journalist who leaked the document the harm was already done and a scandal will only boost the ratings of the leaked document.

But what about the western media ?

In one of the recent debates about Radovan Karadzic's trial in the Hague, a question came from one of the participants, about the possibility of George W Bush or Tony Blair answering to the allegations that the war in Iraq was illegal. Is there a fear in the big western media outlets to dismay their readers who support the troops even if they don't support the war ?

In a 2 months delay, the testimonies of war crimes done by the IDF in the last war in Gaza are finally reaching Israeli media. To the testimonies of combat troops who took part in the war, there was an interesting new addition discovered by Haaretz (here is an English version from the independent). That came from a T shirts print shop that decided to share with haaretz newspaper what kind of t shirts are being costume made for numerous IDF units. It's important to say that those T shirts are bought by the soldiers themselves and the designs are made in small units such as platoons. on the other hand this is important to remember that this is still an army, there is always an open eye that checks for shavings and clean appearance and so on.

Media is wrong when covering the Israeli right

When CNN and Fox news are singing the same tune that is sang in Al Jazeera English it can only spell one thing, Laziness.

The song i am speaking of is called, "Benjamin Netanyahu is going to form a right wing government that will bury any chance for peace." and it's chorus goes "maybe if Benjamin Netanyahu will for a unity government there will be still a chance for peace.

So here is one fact, The unity government that ruled in Israel at 2003 was formed by the likud party and the Labour party, Ariel Sharon was still the chairman of the Likud party. at that year, one of the most raciest laws was introduced to the Israeli law book, the "Citizenship and Entry into Israel Law". Basically this law means that if I, as an Israeli, get married to a Palestinian that lives in Gaza or in the west bank she wont get an Israeli citizenship automatically. only because she is a Palestinian. Avigdor Lieberman was the head of Israel Beitenu that at the time had only 7 seats in the Israeli parliament and was the minister of transportation.

When asked today about the haaretz scoop bringing testimonies of IFD soldiers speaking of their experiments killing and targeting civilians in the last war in Gaza. Mike gravel said at Al Jazeera english, that it's a shame that the Israeli Defence Force will investigate those claims but the United state Senate wont investigate the usage of American sponsored weapons in Gaza. Well it's also a shame that the money that the USA is helping Israel with can only be used for buying weapons. The Israeli government had spent about 4 billion NIS which are about 1 billion US Dollars on bombing Gaza but it found it difficult to find 15 million NIS to do the minimum that was required to make Ashkelon's school students a bit safer and protected from the Hamas rockets that are being fired from Gaza.

Yesterday Charles Freeman had released a statement saying he withdraws his acceptance to chair the National Intelligence Council. that statement came after a smear campaign ran by Aipac and their representatives in the senate like John Lieberman.

The bulk of the criticism that Aipac had against Freeman nominee was that allegedly, he has economic ties with Saudi Arabia, and several marks he made about the Chinese regime. Yes, a lobby group who states that it's aim is to help Israel ( a foreign country) and that supported George W Bush, ( a failed business man that got almost all his funding from the Bin Laden Family) is saying Charles Freeman can't be the chair of the National Intelligence Council because his judgement might be influenced in favour of a foreign country. a foreign country which isn't Israel that is.

Even if there was truth in what Aipac is saying, (there isn't i looked everywhere), there is a bigger problem with Aipac. As an Israeli who lives in Israel I have found out that Aipac, while saying they are doing whatever it can to help Israel and the Jewish people, are actually doing just the opposite.

For once, the pride of Aipac is that in the US politics, supporting Israel is a bipartisan tabu, which means you can't have an intelligent discussion no where in the american media, about what is REALY in Israel interest. Aipac holds the keys to that truth like the Catholic church hold the keys for the right way to heaven. So for the last 40 years, Israel acts in the middle east like a brat kid that has a bully big brother in a call's reach, how should Israel will chose to redraw from the occupied territories under those terms ?

But what's more, Aipac traditionally holds a more militant views than the Israeli public, even if you don't count the Palestinians who holds Israeli citizenship. While saying that in the last elections Israel chose "right", (the Israeli term for militant or hawkish) about 60% of the Israeli public is for a two states solution and a redraw from most of the occupied territories.

When I first heard that Jimmy Fallon is going to replace Conan O'Brien the first question that came to my mind was, why not Tina Fey ? The next time there will be an opening for a late night host will be in about 20 years not 4.

Just look at those two and try to tell me what was going in NBC's executives minds when they decided that the Fallon is the best choice to replace the Conan ? and where is Lady Lynn Forester De Rothschild when you need one ?

Left and Right are usually used for economic agendas, while the right stands for free market and the left stands for anything that has more government control over the market.

In Israel all the big parties, meaning Likud, Kadima (which is actualy Likud reloaded), Israel Beiteinu and avoda (labour party) are all sharing more or less the same economic and social agenda, even though the labour party might dispute it, it was them that started the privatization of the Israeli market to a small circle of friends. when those 4 parties won 83 seats out of the 120 in the Israeli Knesset I said that the 18 families running the israeli market and media have the power they were seeking for and nothing is new.
There are only two parties that I (and it is my personal opinion) will call left wind parties. those are Hadash and Daam.

some people might want to add the Israeli Labor Party and Meretz to the list of left wing parties in Israel, they are some what right, both the labout party and meretz are built on the bases of two socialist parties and the two big organisations that formes the Kibbutz Movement. But in my opinion, while those organisations were rasing the socialisem flag they did it only in favour of the Kibbutzes and not in favour of the real Proletariat, the Development towns.

In the Israeli politics, Right and Left is more often to be used for Hawks and Doves, Militants and peace seeking.

In my opinion like with the economic question, there is no real deferance betweet "left" and "right".

There's some talk in the media about Benjamin Netanyahu being to hawkish and that the raising of the fascist party Israel Beiteinu together with the rise of Netanyahu is bad news for the prospect of peace.

This argument would mean anything if we hadn't seen the Kadima and Labour party wage the most brutal war ever fought in the Israeli-Arab conflict less than a month ago. Never in the history of the Israeli army so many civilians were killed for NO REASON.

So my personal feeling is that while the Israeli and the American media is cuaght in their own spins, lies and cover ups no good will come, who ever is the prime minister of israel.

The wire was actually the worst television series on television, but that's exactly what made it so amazing. It was more like an unwritten novel adapted to be broadcast as a television series. It even seams that if The Wire had a novel to base on it wouldn't have ruined it the way most television series do, trying to simplify the story, "cutting the fat", flattening deep characters to cardboard and sometimes even combining some.

After so many years that series like Law&Order and C.S.I hold the hegemony of crime TV David Simon and the other creators of The wire showed the world that you can make a TV show about crime that has a little more depth from Tom&Jerry.

Some people will point to The Wire's ratings and say, "No they didn't", but all the small reasons for the Wire's poor ratings, are the same things that made the show so great.

The first thing is that David Simon and the other creators of The wire had an agenda and even the aspiration to warp in a TV show. Generally you can say that if "Rome" is about the decay of the Roman empire, The wire is about the decay of the US empire.

The wire brought the poor violent reality of the Inner-City life to prime time TV. Not trying to suggest a solution, but from a need, a journalist need, to shake the puritan carpet that covers the inconvenient truth of Inner-City life in the US of A. The Wire showed how the criminals, the po-lice, the justice system, the politicians and the media are all playing a zero sum game, a game that deteriorates the society they so called serve, and in the same time keeps them in the various power positions they hold.
